20 questions with K. Lum
Q: As a coach, what’s your bar for success?
I strive to support my clients in achieving meaningful shifts and measurable progress — but they set the bar, not me. Breakthroughs, re-energized spirits, deep clarity, and courage in action are very rewarding outcomes for me as a coach.
Q: What do you never leave home without?
My Western Bound backpack — it has so many little compartments for all my favorite things… literally everything I need fits in that bag!
Q: What do you do on your best days?
On my best days I wake up without an alarm and spend my mornings with my people, moving slow and thoughtfully. I have Nourishmint juice BEFORE I savor my coffee, and then take nootropics (Bulletproof Unfair Advantage) to kickstart my get-it-done mode for the rest of the day! Good amounts of music, doses of fresh air, and lots of creative problem solving and making shit happen for my clients!
Q: Wildest training moment?
Well, it’s got to be the infamous Hot Dog Costume incident. I was presenting a leadership training event for a new client, who told me they were bringing the official Weinersnitchel Hot Dog mobile to surprise their team during the lunch break. To get in on the fun, I orchestrated a group breakout session so I could slip away unnoticed and change into a borrowed hot dog costume… only to come back up the elevator, and learn that the hot dog truck was a no-go, and they’d ordered sandwiches as plan B! — they’d forgotten to tell me. So there I was, in a hot dog costume, eating a sandwich. I got extra kudos for effort, and lots of photo opps!!!
Q: Happy hour order of choice?
Spicy margarita!
Q: What kind of music always gets you dancing?
PINK, Tones & I, Doobie Brothers and a solid 80’s playlist
Q: Secret talents?
I danced competitively growing up, and then I opened a dance studio in the small town of Ennis! During my studio’s heyday, I taught 16 classes a week. I still love to tap dance, and if you join for one of my Clarity & Conviction Huddles, I can almost guarantee you’ll see me movin’ (and get the invite to move yourself)!
Q: Did you choose your profession or did it choose you?
Maybe a little of both! I knew early on in college that speech communications and ‘group process’ were intriguing to me. I had incredible mentors in the facilitation and leadership space that inspired me and modeled what was possible. I am forever grateful and I love my work!
Q: Do you have a signature dish you like to prepare for company?
Hell no! I don’t cook — I’m all about a solid potluck, but I love to host friends and bust out great mocktails and cocktails.
Q: Where are you on the weekends?
Fly fishing on the Madison! I’ve been fly fishing since 1993 — it’s my happy place, and it’s always a special place for our family. Dry fly fishing is my absolute favorite — and salmonfly season is the BEST!
